A Coca-Cola to settle it.
An all-night porcupine
intestine disco dance.
Even my favourite recliner,
where I slept two weeks
after the colostomy
couldn’t console me
with warm brown leather.
8 a.m., emergency room,
sonogram after sonogram,
IV morphine drip,
three days on my back,
then home again to wait
another month, to still myself
when the quills pulse and poke,
to opiate and doze like a Joey

the vinyl chords
spinal cords
in prayer
let them vibrate hum sing
down alley ways
down town east sides
mountain trails
snap snap
go the spinal chords
vinyl cords
in rage
they sweat shudder expire
in macadam puddles
out side
safe injection sites
peat bogs
wake wake
the body
to the sirens of the street
of the wood
of this natural / civic world
and know there is
no easy leaving

Life upturned.
Stuffed into boxes labelled
LIVING ROOM
in unfamiliar upper case
someone else’s hands wrap
all the artefacts of my previous self
in printless paper.
Box contents reveal odd juxtapositions –
a ball of paper blooms into: a key,
a rusty screw, a paperclip,
and 2 dead AA coppertops.
We explore our new return address
a coat stiffened into a stranger’s shape
shrug our shoulders
