Watching
I sit on the dock
observe a silent
love affair
as two loons troll
for insects
a mid afternoon snack
she in
front
he
behind
She submerges fully
he and I
wait
expectantly
When she surfaces
some distance
away
he rushes to her side
Wimp I think
get a backbone
forge ahead
This ritual of
dive
wait
surface
carries on
Each time
he hastens to her side
But then I think of you.
my diving
under
leaping in
and I know
he’s really just there
with a hand
on her back
and she will know
he’s watching out
for her
