THE GREAT FLOOD OF 2013 & The Calgary Project – A City Map in Verse and Visual

DEADLINE EXTENDED TO GIVE OUR FABULOUS ARTISTS TIME TO RECOVER FROM THE FLOODING – NEW DEADLINE: AUGUST 15, 2013!

Our hearts go out to all people in southern Alberta who have been devastated by the flooding, including many of our RE:actors.

The RE:actors have all been busy – surviving the storm, mucking out, taking stock, comforting, entertaining, gutting buildings, providing sustenance – and it will take many more months and willing hands and hearts as big as the prairie sky before everyone affected by the floods is back to normal, or whatever that sort of “new normal” is called.

We overheard one volunteer at an evacuation shelter say that she realized she’s going to miss the flood, in some ways, because once the emergency is over people will just go back to being distant and less neighbourly, and she’s absolutely loved the sense of community and kindness and camaraderie of the past week.

Perhaps we take that sense of community for granted in the arts community – because we feel it even when life is flowing along quietly, like the Elbow on a bone dry day in August.

We wish our many friends and colleagues well, and we shall continue to lend our hands to the cause.

We look forward to your submissions – and can imagine that the poems and visual art inspired by the flood will be profoundly moving. There will be room in the anthology for this part of our collective story.

Take great good care!

The RE:actors – Kris Demeanor, Dymphny Dronyk, Bridget Honch, Tyler Perry, Diane Guichon, Rob Omura, Juleta Severson-Baker & Angela Kublik
